Abstract

ENGLISH The aim of this study is to find out the students‟ vocabulary, the researcher found that students are poor in vocabulary. Students at MTs NW Pengadang have low capability on vocabulary. When students asked to read some materials, they did not understand the text effectively. English teacher said most of the students are lazy to memorize the vocabulary have low capabilities, they did not understand the text which they read comprehensively. The outcome indicates that they have low score on the vocabulary. As a result, this study aimed to improve students‟ vocabulary using folktales. This study adopted Action Research method. The phase of the research contains of two cycles in which every cycle consists of 4 steps in terms of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The participants were taken by 18 students of 8th grade at MTs NW Pengadang. The data were collected using a test and observation. This data collection used data instruments such as the teacher and students worksheets for reading activities, and a piece of paper test to know research findings outcome. The research finding indicates that Folktales can improve students‟ vocabulary. The data were collected indicates that students‟ learning outcome achieved 65% (Cycle I), and 86% (Cycle II). It means that there was a significance improvement which students on applying folktales to improve students‟ vocabulary from cycle I to cycle II.
