Abstract

INDONESIA Media sosial merupakan media digital yang digunakan oleh seseorang dalam berbagai macam kebutuhan seperti untuk hiburan, bisnis, komunikasi, dan sebagai media pembelajaran. Di era digital seperti sekarang ini, media sosial juga digunakan sebagai media pembelajaran bahasa Inggris yang kekinian, menyenangkan dan banyak digemari oleh pelajar. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menggali tentang jenis media sosial yang paling sering diakses oleh mahasiswa jurusan bahasa Inggris Universitas Islam Negeri Mataram (UIN MATARAM) sebagai platform belajar berbicara/speaking dan peran sosial media tersebut dalam meningkatkan kemampuan speaking mahasiswa. Penelitian deskriftif kualitatif ini melibatkan 8 orang mahasiswa sebagai responden. Data penelitian diperoleh dengan cara observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi yang ditranskrip secara deskriptif. Sementara itu, proses analisis data menggunakan reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa media sosial YouTube, Instagram dan Tik-Tok merupakan media sosial yang paling sering diakes oleh mahasiswa sebagai platform dalam meningkatan kemampuan speaking. Sementara itu, beberapa fitur seperti video, chat box, dan pesan suara merupakan peran media sosial yang mudah diakses bagi mahasiswa sehingga meningkatkan kemampuan speaking mereka. INGGRIS Social media is digital media that is used by someone for various needs such as for entertainment, business, communication, and as a medium of learning. In today's digital era, social media is also used as a medium for learning English which is contemporary, fun and much-loved by students. This study aims to explore the types of social media that are most frequently accessed by students majoring in English at the State Islamic University of Mataram (UIN MATARAM) as a platform for learning speaking and the role of social media in improving students' speaking skills. This qualitative descriptive research involved 8 students as respondents. The research data were obtained by means of observation, interviews, and documentations which were transcribed descriptively. Meanwhile, the data analysis process uses data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions. The results of this study indicate that YouTube, Instagram and Tik-Tok are the social media most frequently accessed by students as a platform to improve speaking skills. Meanwhile, several features such as videos, chat boxes, and voice messages of social media are the social media roles that are easily accessible for students to improve their speaking skills.
